چکیده

Whether root systems an(d tops of plants are essentially alike or notably different with regard to their temperature relations is an importanit question in fundamental plaiit physiology, as well as in ecology, in pathology, and in the study of the climatic distribution of plants in nature and in cultivation. This general question is dealt with in the present paper with respect to seedlings of the cotton plant, Gossypiutm hirsuht nt L. The results presented show elong, ation rates of primary roots and hypocotyls for each of 8 different maintained teimiperatures, all parts of each seedling being exposed to the same temperature. Data are also ineluded on the development of cotyledons and secondaryroots anid on seedling weights.

RCN1-regulated phosphatase activity and EIN2 modulate hypocotyl gravitropism by a mechanism that does not require ethylene signaling.

The roots curl in naphthylphthalamic acid1 (rcn1) mutant of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) has altered auxin transport, gravitropism, and ethylene response, providing an opportunity to analyze the interplay between ethylene and auxin in control of seedling growth. Roots of rcn1 seedlings were previously shown to have altered auxin transport, growth, and gravitropism, while rcn1 hypocotyl el...

Disease resistance conferred by the expression of a gene encoding a synthetic peptide in transgenic cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants.

Fertile, transgenic cotton plants expressing the synthetic antimicrobial peptide, D4E1, were produced through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. PCR products and Southern blots confirmed integration of the D4E1 gene, while RT-PCR of cotton RNA confirmed the presence of D4E1 transcripts. In vitro assays with crude leaf protein extracts from T0 and T1 plants confirmed that D4E1 was expressed ...

Using SNPs for transplanting of cotton seedlings to increase plant growth and yield

Straw nursery pots (SNPs), which utilize agricultural residues such as wheatstraw and corn stalks as raw materials, can be widely used in the transplantingof seedlings of crops, vegetables, flowers and trees. Plastic nursery pots (PNPs)and direct sowing (DS) were used as controls in evaluating the effects of SNPson plant growth, dry matter partitioning, yields and economic benefits oftransplant...

The Growth and Duration of Life of Celosia Cristata Seedlings at Different Temperatures

Daily measurements of hypocotyl length were made on Celosia cristata seedlings cultured in darkness under aseptic conditions at six constant temperatures between 14.5 degrees and 40.5 degrees C. At 40.5 degrees roots did not penetrate the agar and only the hypocotyls that were supported by the wall of the test tube could be measured. The growth curves were of the generalized logistic type, but ...

Root growth and spatial distribution characteristics for seedlings raised in substrate and transplanted cotton

In this study, transplanting cotton seedlings grown in artificial substrate is considered due to recent increased interest in cotton planting labor saving approaches. The nursery methods used for growing cotton seedlings affect root growth. However, the underlying functional responses of root growth to variations in cotton seedling transplanting methods are poorly understood. We assessed the re...
